van gundy and orlando magic part ways

ORLANDO – Orlando Magic Chief Executive Officer Alex Martins announced today that Stan Van Gundy has been relieved of his duties as head coach. In addition President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Otis Smith and the organization have mutually agreed to part ways. "On behalf of the DeVos Family, we sincerely appreciate and thank Otis and Stan for all that they have done on and off the floor for the Orlando Magic,” said Martins. "These are the days you dread in this business, but we feel it's time for new leadership and new voices. "They both brought die-hard dedication and an unmatched work ethic on a daily basis,” added Martins. “Their success is well documented, as the Orlando Magic has had the fourth best record in the NBA over the last five years, and entering the playoffs this year the third most playoff wins over that period of time. The disappointment of getting eliminated in the first round of the playoffs these past two seasons played a primary role in our decision, as we feel our momentum towards winning a championship has paused. We wish Otis and Stan all the best and we look forward to taking the next step towards winning that championship." Van Gundy was named head coach on June 7, 2007, becoming the ninth head coach in franchise history. Van Gundy has a career NBA head coaching regular season record of 371-208 (.641), including 259-135 (.657) in five seasons in Orlando. He led Orlando to five postseason berths, three Southeast Division titles and the 2009 Eastern Conference crown. Prior to coming to Orlando he served as head coach of the Miami Heat for two-plus seasons. In 2007-‘08, his first season in Orlando, Van Gundy guided the Magic to a 52-30 record and the Southeast Division Championship. It was the Magic's first division crown since 1995-‘96. Orlando also advanced past the opening round of the NBA Playoffs for the first time since 1996, defeating Toronto 4-1. During the 2008-‘09 campaign Van Gundy led the Magic to a 59-23 record and through a memorable playoff run, capped off with the 2009 Eastern Conference championship and a berth in the NBA Finals, marking the second trip in franchise history. In 2009-‘10, Van Gundy directed the Magic to the Eastern Conference Finals for the second straight year, after compiling a 59-23 record during the season. Last season, 2010-‘11, Orlando finished 52-30 and made its fourth straight trip to the playoffs. It was Orlando's fourth straight 50-win season and Van Gundy became the second-fastest active coach to 300 career wins and seventh-fastest all-time. He also coached his 500th career game and had the sixth-most wins in NBA history through 500 contests. This past season, Orlando finished 37-29 (.561), good for sixth-best in the Eastern Conference. The Magic advanced to the postseason for the sixth consecutive time, the longest active streak in the Eastern Conference. Smith was promoted to president of basketball operations on July 28, 2010. Smith was named general manager on May 3, 2006. He was assistant general manager during the 2005-06 campaign, after serving as director of player development for two seasons. Under Smith’s leadership from 2005-‘06 to 2011-‘12, Orlando advance to the playoffs all six times, recorded 50-plus victories in a club-record four straight seasons (2007-‘08 to 2010-‘11), captured three consecutive Southeast Division titles (2007-‘10), advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals in two straight postseasons (2009-‘10) and reached the 2009 NBA Finals after winning the Eastern Conference title. The Magic were 299-177 (.628) during Smith’s tenure as general manager. Smith was a member of the inaugural 1989-‘90 Magic squad and spent three seasons playing in Orlando (1989-‘92). Smith averaged 11.4 ppg., 4.1 rpg., 1.9 apg. and 1.01 stlpg. in 195 games with the Magic. He played in 375 career NBA regular season games with Denver, Golden State and Orlando, averaging 10.5 ppg., 3.8 rpg., 1.8 apg. and 1.01 stlpg. in 20.6 mining.

editorial: aol just done out flipped flip board

In an attemp to get back in the mobile electronics game, aol decided to enter (the already crowded) game of daily news. Note, the daily nebraskan has been a part of this game for years. If you have ever used the flip board app for iPad then you know how sweet it is. For those who don't know, flip board basically takes daily news and puts it into a more eye friendly format. Aol does the same thing with what it calls editions but it makes it even more user based. After downloading the app, the first thing it has you do is connect to facebook, twitter, and naturally aim. Once connected to all of these it has you select the content that you would like to see in your magazine and it even has you pick the colors that you want the color of your daily magazines to be. After going through the initial process, a magazine is delivered to your iPad daily with exactly the content you want on it. Best part, it's free!

IPad only newspaper for only $.99...a week

I am a nerd. My dream day starts with waking up in the morning to a cup of hot coffee, whipping out the iPad and reading the newspaper. Well among all his faults, Rupert Murdoch has done something right, and that is creating an iPad only newspaper for $.99 a week of $39 a year. Don't think for one second that you will be ripped off of good content because of it's low price. The newspaper is delivered every day and stuffed with good informaton.

back on the trail of d.b. cooper

The news of D.B. Cooper is long gone. Right? Wrong! The FBI are back and hot on the trail of D.B. Cooper. Here is a quick summary of what Dan Cooper did 40 years ago. D.B. extorted $200,000, then hijacked an airplane (he ordered a whiskey and while the flight attendant was serving him a drink he handed her a napkin that said "I HAVE A BOMB IN MY BRIEFCASE. I WILL USE IT IF NECESSARY. I WANT YOU TO SIT NEXT TO ME. YOU ARE BEING HIJACKED") just to make a daring jump with a parachute and has never been seen since.
The recent tip provided to the FBI came from a law enforcement member who directed investigators to a person who might have helpful information on the suspect, FBI spokeswoman Ayn Sandalo Dietrich told The Seattle Times on Sunday. She called the new information the "most promising lead we have right now," but cautioned that investigators were not on the verge of breaking the case.

IPHONE 5 COVERAGE: this weeks iphone 5 rumors round-up

And this weeks big story was the supposed leaked case of the upcoming iPhone 5. Above is a picture of the case thus showing the potential for a bigger screen and slimmer design which have essentially been the rumors since the beginning. The case shows space for an edge to edge screen hence the slim rubber edge around the case. From what I can see, it looks like the case might have mildly rounded edges in the back, propelling the rumors of a slightly curved back.
A poll that was taken this week shows that over 30% of current iPhone owners have already considered the iPhone 5 and they don't even know what it looks likes yet. Stay tuned to TDN for the latest.

IPHONE 5 COVERAGE: the idea of a iphone 4S dead thanks to a statement from verizon

The Original Spectulated iPhone 4S

Here is the quote that makes the idea of an iPhone 4S dead. "We are probably what I would view as maybe a quarter behind what we had talked about in January, primarily because we expected an iPhone 5 refresh sometime this summer. We don’t know when the next one is going to come out. You will have to ask Apple that, but we expect that probably sometime in the fall, and I think you will see a significant jump there when we get to that point." That quote comes from CEO Lowell McAdam. Thanks to that quote, you can now assume that the next iPhone to come out will be a make-over versus the speculation of a refresh.

google+ app now available for iphone

Naturally the Google+ app has been available for android devices since the beginning, but those with iPhones have had to stick to the Google+ mobile site. The time has now come for a Google+ iPhone app. I have played with both the iPhone and the Android variations of the app and they run primarily the same except for some minor visual queues. At least google is finally showing some iPhone love.

love listening to free music? well spotify loves giving it to us.

Finally. As our European friends have been telling us for years, Spotify ($Free) is what the long-rumored iTunes subscription service was supposed to be. Boasting a catalog of 15 million songs, it lets you search for and listen to specific songs, artists, and entire albums (for up to 10 hours a month), after which you'll need to pony up $5 for the Premium service and unlimited computer-based listening or $10 for the Unlimited service, which gives you app access from your iPhone or Android device, the ability to download music for listening online, enhanced sound quality, and much more. Sorry iTunes Match, but you're no match for this.

as a side note, i find it funny that when he sorts things by a conservative point of view, fox news is one of the websites that he uses as an example. fair and balanced? doubt it.

skype and facebook fire up a spicy relationship

It ain't the first time Mark Zuckerberg has taken the stage to announce... something, but today's shindig is resulting in "something" that's a bit more exciting for the average user. As rumored, the world's most notable VoIP service is set to become exceedingly integrated with the world's most notable social network. Skype has just thrown up a teaser page for v5.3 for Windows (and v5.5 Beta), noting that Skype and Facebook will aim to provide "the best of both worlds."

Zuck is primarily announcing three main things today: group chat, a new way to chat ("an easier way to find someone who is online") and Skype-enabled video chat. Oh, and the tiny, tiny fact that there's now 750 million Facebook members. What's notable is just how easy it is to fire up a group chat (or send transcripts to group members who miss out) and get a video call going using your existing Skype contact list. A single click is all it takes, and we're told that it'll be rolled out to everyone "over the next few weeks" in 70 different languages. The new chat design will be scalable based on your browser size, and the company made a point to mention that it'll be listening closely to user input in order to iterate as it moves forward.

Tony Bates stepped up to the plate, and noted that over 300 million videocall minutes a month are going through Skype, and at peak times, over half of its traffic is video. He also noted that the technology behind it was "tough" to construct, but somehow it managed to hammer this whole thing out in around six months via joint development. There's also talk about future "paid products" in due time, and it's strikingly clear that this partnership isn't going to fade anytime soon. If you're looking to take a dive yourself, hit up the source links below for the Windows applications, and wear that F5 button out over at Facebook's homepage if you're more of the "in-browser" type.

Oh, and if you're curious about mobile -- video chat isn't active on that front yet, and Mark's not spilling any details on "when." To quote him on a question of time tables: "We'll see."
